Area of Science:

  • Surgical Education
  • Medical Device Simulation
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery Training

Background:

  • Veress needle (VN) insertion requires tactile feedback for effective training.
  • Observation alone is insufficient for mastering VN insertion skills.
  • A need exists for a realistic and reproducible training model.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a novel training model for Veress needle insertion.
  • To evaluate the validity of this model in simulating real surgical experiences.
  • To assess its utility for surgical skill acquisition.

Main Methods:

  • A three-layer synthetic model mimicking abdominal wall layers was created.
  • Experienced surgeons and residents practiced VN insertion on the model.
  • Participant feedback was collected via comments and questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • The model accurately simulated surgical shape, structure, and tactile feedback.
  • 86% of participants found the force feedback comparable to real surgery.
  • 93% considered the model a valuable pre-patient training resource.

Conclusions:

  • The developed Veress needle insertion training model offers a valuable opportunity to practice a critical surgical skill.
  • The model is simple, reproducible, and provides a realistic simulation of surgery.
  • It serves as an effective tool for enhancing surgical proficiency.
