  • To introduce and evaluate a novel external mentorship model for DNP-prepared faculty.
  • To facilitate the development of a scholarship program for DNP faculty in academic roles.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a new external mentorship model for DNP faculty, drawing inspiration from PhD researcher mentorship archetypes.
  • Implemented and assessed the model through a yearlong partnership between a junior faculty member and a seasoned external mentor.

Main Results:

  • The initial mentor-mentee dyad successfully met or exceeded all contractual goals.
  • Achieved outcomes included presentations, manuscript preparation, leadership development, and effective role navigation in higher education.
  • Additional external mentorship dyads are currently being established.

Conclusions:

  • A yearlong partnership with a matched, external, experienced mentor shows potential to positively impact the scholarship trajectory of DNP faculty.
  • This model offers a promising strategy for supporting DNP-prepared faculty in higher education to build sustainable scholarship programs.
