Summary

Poor sleep quality and higher anxiety/depression levels are linked to erectile dysfunction (ED). However, this study found no association between chronotype and ED, suggesting sleep quality is a key factor to assess in ED patients.

Background:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) significantly impacts quality of life.
  • Sleep disturbances and chronotype variations are increasingly recognized as affecting overall health, including sexual function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between sleep quality, chronotype, and erectile dysfunction.
  • To compare sleep parameters and chronotype between ED patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 69 ED patients and 64 healthy controls were assessed.
  • Standardized questionnaires were used, including the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ).

Main Results:

  • ED patients exhibited significantly poorer sleep quality (higher PSQI scores) and higher levels of anxiety and depression (higher HADS scores) compared to controls.
  • No significant differences were found in chronotype (MEQ scores) or insomnia severity (ISI scores) between the groups.
  • Erectile dysfunction severity (IIEF scores) correlated negatively with sleep quality (PSQI) and positively with anxiety/depression (HADS).

Conclusions:

  • Sleep quality, anxiety, and depression are important factors to consider in the evaluation of erectile dysfunction.
  • Chronotype differences do not appear to be directly associated with erectile dysfunction in this study population.
