Primary gastric rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer, was diagnosed in an elderly man presenting with abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a large stomach tumor with splenic vein thrombosis, confirmed by biopsy.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- Primary gastric rhabdomyosarcoma is an exceptionally rare malignancy.
- Rhabdomyosarcoma typically originates in skeletal muscle, making gastric involvement uncommon.
Observation:
- An 87-year-old male presented with abdominal pain.
- Computed tomography (CT) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-CT identified a large tumor in the stomach's muscularis propria.
- Splenic vein tumor thrombosis was also detected.
Findings:
- Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis.
- The tumor's origin from the muscularis propria of the stomach was established.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in the differential for gastric masses.
- Accurate diagnosis through advanced imaging and biopsy is crucial for appropriate management of gastric rhabdomyosarcoma.
- Further research into the etiology and treatment of primary gastric rhabdomyosarcoma is warranted.
