Indium tin oxide (ITO) aerogels were synthesized using two novel methods. Annealing significantly improved their electrical conductivity, making them promising for energy storage and optoelectronic devices.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Nanotechnology
  • Electrochemistry

Background:

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) aerogels possess high surface area, porosity, and conductivity.
  • These properties make them suitable for electrodes in batteries, solar cells, fuel cells, and optoelectronic applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize ITO aerogels using two distinct non-aqueous sol-gel approaches.
  • To investigate the effect of annealing on the electrical conductivity and surface area of ITO aerogels.

Main Methods:

  • Nonaqueous one-pot sol-gel synthesis in benzylamine (BnNH2) followed by critical point drying (CPD).
  • Nonaqueous sol-gel synthesis in benzyl alcohol (BnOH) with controlled destabilization and CPD.
  • Annealing of synthesized ITO aerogels in N2 atmosphere to enhance electrical properties.

Main Results:

  • Both synthesis methods yielded ITO aerogels with desirable properties.
  • As-synthesized aerogels had low conductivity; annealing improved it by 2-3 orders of magnitude (resistivity 64.5-1.6 kΩ·cm).
  • N2 atmosphere annealing further reduced resistivity to 0.2-0.6 kΩ·cm, with BET surface area decreasing from 106.2 to 55.6 m²/g.

Conclusions:

  • Both synthesis strategies are effective for producing ITO aerogels.
  • Annealing is crucial for enhancing electrical conductivity, making these aerogels highly promising for energy storage and optoelectronics.
