Endothelial Function in Youth With Bipolar Disorder: Preliminary Evidence for Mood Polarity Differences

Youth with bipolar disorder (BD) show altered endothelial function, a marker of cardiovascular disease risk. Specifically, depressed mood is linked to lower RHI, while hypomanic/mixed states show higher RHI in adolescents.

- Symptomatic youth with bipolar disorder demonstrate abnormal RHI that varies with mood polarity.
- These findings suggest that endothelial dysfunction may play a role in the psychiatric symptoms and cardiovascular risk observed in BD.
- Further research with larger samples and prospective measures is warranted to explore the link between endothelial dysfunction and BD outcomes.
