Predatory publishers pose a significant threat to the scientific literature.
Research quantifying predatory publishing in health care is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify characteristics of empirical studies on predatory publishing.
To understand the extent of predatory publishing in health care.

Main Methods:

Scoping review of PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Scopus databases.
Screened 4967 articles, with 77 empirical studies included in the review.

Main Results:

Most studies were bibliometric or document analyses (n=56).
Predominant fields were medicine (40%) and multidisciplinary (34%), with 11 nursing studies.
Articles in predatory journals were of lower quality and cited in legitimate nursing journals.

Conclusions:

Empirical studies on predatory publishing in health care are limited despite abundant literature.
Individual vigilance is insufficient; institutional policies and technical safeguards are crucial.
Addressing predatory publishing is essential to maintain the integrity of health care literature.
