    Background:

    • Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S.
    • Veterans within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) are disproportionately affected by OUD.
    • Sublingual buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone) is a common medication-assisted treatment for OUD.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of Sublocade (buprenorphine extended-release) in reducing cravings among veterans with OUD.
    • To explore Sublocade as an alternative to Suboxone for veterans experiencing treatment challenges.

    Main Methods:

    • A quality improvement project enrolled 15 veterans with OUD into a Sublocade monthly injection program.
    • Inclusion criteria included prior enrollment and disenrollment from Suboxone.
    • Cravings were assessed pre- and post-Sublocade initiation.

    Main Results:

    • Sublocade treatment resulted in a statistically significant reduction in cravings (p = .001).
    • In this cohort, cravings were completely eliminated after Sublocade enrollment.
    • The study population was predominantly male (93%) with a median age of 42.

    Conclusions:

    • Sublocade is a viable alternative medication-assisted treatment for veterans with OUD.
    • Sublocade may mitigate risks associated with Suboxone, such as withdrawal and drug diversion.
    • Further research is warranted to confirm these findings in larger veteran populations.
