Summary

The 694-nm Q-switched ruby laser (QSRL) effectively treats physiologic gingival hyperpigmentation (PGH) without ablation. This non-ablative laser offers a safe and promising option for PGH depigmentation with no reported re-pigmentation.

Background:

  • Physiologic gingival hyperpigmentation (PGH) is a common, benign condition caused by increased melanin in darker-skinned individuals.
  • Current laser treatments for PGH are often ablative, leading to non-selective tissue damage.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a non-ablative 694-nm Q-switched ruby laser (QSRL) for PGH depigmentation.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective, single-center study was conducted.
  • Four patients diagnosed with PGH were treated with QSRL between March 2019 and November 2020.

Main Results:

  • Complete depigmentation was achieved in all patients after 1-3 QSRL sessions.
  • The average follow-up was 11 months, with no instances of re-pigmentation.
  • Two patients experienced mild local tenderness and transient erosions.

Conclusions:

  • The 694-nm QSRL is a novel, safe, and effective non-ablative treatment for PGH.
  • This modality minimizes tissue damage and optimizes treatment outcomes for PGH.
