This systematic review clarifies predesign evaluation (PDE), postoccupancy evaluation (POE), and evidence-based design (EBD) in the building life cycle. Findings reveal consistent understanding of POE and EBD, but a diffuse understanding of PDE, highlighting areas for future research.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare Design
- Building Performance Evaluation
- Architectural Research
Background:
- Systematic literature review on predesign evaluation (PDE), postoccupancy evaluation (POE), and evidence-based design (EBD).
- Aims to delimit concepts, relationships, and applications within the building life cycle.
- Addresses the need for common understanding and identification of gaps in these critical areas.
Approach:
- Utilized Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol.
- Searched Scopus and Web of Science databases up to December 2021.
- Included texts presenting concepts, methods, or tools in healthcare and other environments, excluding unrelated or duplicated reports.
Key Points:
- Identified 799 reports, selecting 53 relevant records after rigorous screening.
- Extracted concepts, relationships, and frameworks from the selected literature.
- Results show a consistent understanding of POE and EBD, contrasted with a diffuse understanding of PDE.
Conclusions:
- Proposes a summary of the three concepts and two frameworks for building assessment.
- Contextualizes framework application in specific research areas.
- Recommends detailed adjustments for classifying building assessment methods, procedures, and tools.
