Background:

The Flint water crisis, beginning in 2014, led to widespread lead exposure concerns among residents.
A collaborative effort was initiated between the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services and community pharmacies to address lead toxicity.
The program aimed to mitigate health disparities and complications associated with lead exposure.

Observation:

A pharmacy-based blood lead testing program was established in 2016, utilizing Magellan LeadCare II analyzers.
Walk-in testing services were provided at three community pharmacies in Flint from June to August 2016.
Pharmacists played a crucial role in offering accessible screening to the affected population.

Findings:

A total of 77 individuals underwent blood lead screening.
Five percent of individuals screened had blood lead levels of 5 μg/dL or higher, with two cases in children under six.
Nineteen percent of individuals had levels of 3.5 μg/dL or higher, indicating a significant public health concern.

Implications:

The study highlights the successful implementation of a pharmacy-led blood lead testing program during a public health crisis.
This collaborative model demonstrates the potential for community pharmacies to expand public health services and address environmental health issues.
The findings provide a template for future crisis-response initiatives involving public health and community pharmacy partnerships.
