This study evaluated disinfectants for cellulose triacetate films, finding butanol vapors and Septonex® to be gentlest. Other disinfectants like alcohol mixtures and ethylene oxide caused plasticizer loss or reduced viscosity in film samples.
Area of Science:
- Film preservation
- Microbiology
- Material science
Background:
- Microbial contamination poses a significant threat to cinematographic films, potentially causing irreversible image data loss.
- Cellulose triacetate, a common film base since the 1940s, exhibits resistance to solvents but can degrade due to microbial activity.
- Effective disinfection methods are crucial for preserving historical film archives.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the impact of four mass-disinfection agents on the properties of cellulose triacetate film.
- To identify disinfectants that minimize damage to the film base while remaining effective against microorganisms.
- To evaluate changes in optical, mechanical, and chemical properties after disinfection and accelerated aging.
Main Methods:
- Four disinfectants were tested: butanol vapors, Bacillol® AF (alcohol mixture), Septonex® (quaternary ammonium bromide solution), and ethylene oxide gas with carbon dioxide.
- Cellulose triacetate film samples underwent disinfection followed by aging for 56 days at 70°C and 55% relative humidity.
- Optical, mechanical, and chemical properties, including degree of substitution and intrinsic viscosity, were analyzed.
Main Results:
- No tested disinfectant altered the degree of substitution of cellulose triacetate.
- Bacillol® AF extraction of plasticizer (triphenyl phosphate) and reduced intrinsic viscosity were observed after aging.
- Ethylene oxide disinfection also resulted in a slight decrease in intrinsic viscosity.
- Butanol vapors and Septonex® showed the least impact on film properties compared to controls.
Conclusions:
- Butanol vapors and Septonex® are recommended as the most suitable disinfectants for cellulose triacetate film bases under the tested conditions.
- Careful selection of disinfection agents is vital to prevent material degradation and preserve film integrity.
- Further research may explore long-term effects and efficacy against a broader spectrum of microbes.

Physical Methods for Controlling Microbial Growth: Radiation and Filtration
Cleaning, Sterilization, and Disinfection
Cleaning
The cleaning process usually involves using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaner and removing foreign material from objects and surfaces, including organic material such as body fluids or inorganic material like soil. Cleaning is performed before high-level disinfection and sterilization because foreign materials on the cover of the devices interfere with process...

Methods of Sterilization I: Physical Methods
Steam sterilization uses non-toxic, low-cost moist heat in the form of saturated steam under pressure, which is fast, microbicidal, and sporicidal, and quickly warms and penetrates fabrics. Autoclaves, or steam sterilizers, expose each item to direct steam contact for a predetermined time at the necessary...
