Insights
Dialysis costs are rising with patient numbers. This review of community hospital dialysis methods estimates an annual cost of $19,000 per patient for functional access.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Healthcare Economics
Background:
- The growing population requiring maintenance dialysis presents significant cost challenges.
- Understanding the financial implications of various dialysis methods is crucial for healthcare providers.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review a community hospital's experience with different dialysis methods over four and a half years.
- To estimate the base-level cost of providing functional access for dialysis patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of dialysis methods used in a community hospital setting.
- Analysis of costs associated with establishing and maintaining functional dialysis access.
Main Results:
- The study reviewed four and a half years of dialysis practices.
- The estimated base-level cost for functional dialysis access was $19,000 per patient annually.
Conclusions:
- Maintenance dialysis is associated with substantial and increasing costs.
- Accurate cost estimation for dialysis access is essential for managing healthcare resources effectively.
Abstract:
As the population requiring maintenance dialysis continues to grow, costs have become an important consideration to professionals dealing with this clinical problem. A four and one-half year experience with various methods of dialysis in a community hospital is reviewed. The overall base-level estimate for providing functional access of various types if $19,000 per patient per year.
