Summary

Background:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases are often linked to metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and diabetes.
  • Previous research explored SD's connection to metabolic factors, but body composition in SD patients remains unevaluated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between seborrheic dermatitis and various body composition parameters.
  • To compare body composition metrics in individuals with SD against a healthy control group.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 39 SD patients and 39 age- and gender-matched controls.
  • Body composition was assessed using the Tanita MC 580 Body Analyzer.
  • The Seborrheic Dermatitis Area and Severity Index (SDASI) was calculated for SD patients.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were found in height, weight, BMI, fat mass, metabolic age, body density, mineral, visceral adiposity, or protein between SD patients and controls.
  • A positive correlation was identified between SDASI and height (p=0.026) and protein levels (p=0.016).
