    Summary

    Intravenous amiodarone dosing may need adjustment. This study found plasma amiodarone concentrations below therapeutic levels in some patients, suggesting higher doses might be needed for optimal antiarrhythmic benefit.

    Background:

    • Amiodarone is a critical antiarrhythmic medication.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize amiodarone and desethylamiodarone plasma concentrations.
    • To evaluate a standard intravenous amiodarone infusion regimen.
    • To compare observed concentrations against the suggested therapeutic range.

    • Eight patients received intravenous amiodarone.
    • Infusion rates were 175 mg/h for 2 hours, then 50 mg/h for 46 hours.
