Summary

A new web-based curriculum on health care disparities (HCD) in Radiology effectively increased trainee awareness and understanding of HCDs. The curriculum was found to be feasible and valuable for radiology residency programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and pilot a comprehensive web-based curriculum on HCDs in Radiology.
  • To assess the educational value and feasibility of the HCD curriculum for radiology trainees.
  • To meet the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education program requirement for HCD education.

Main Methods:

  • A four-module web-based curriculum on HCDs in Radiology was developed.
  • Educational media included lectures, presentations, group discussions, and journal clubs.
  • A pilot study involved 47 radiology residency programs with pre/post-tests and surveys for trainees and facilitators.

Main Results:

  • Trainee knowledge scores on HCDs increased from 65% to 67% (p=0.05).
  • Understanding of HCDs in Radiology significantly improved, with 81% of residents reporting adequate understanding post-curriculum (vs. 45% pre).
  • 75% of program directors found the curriculum easy to implement, and 83% cited lack of standardized curriculum as a prior barrier.

Conclusions:

  • The APDR Health Care Disparities curriculum effectively increased trainee awareness of HCDs in Radiology.
  • The curriculum provided a valuable forum for discussing HCDs and is feasible for residency programs.
  • This resource aids program directors in meeting accreditation requirements for HCD education.
