Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

400
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Stress prevention and management are crucial for maintaining well-being and building resilience. Techniques to manage stress include cultivating qualities like conscientiousness, a sense of personal control, and self-efficacy. Each of these traits significantly reduces stress and promotes healthier lifestyle choices and outcomes.

Self-Discrepancy Theory

One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Cultural Influences on Personality

209
Individualist and collectivist cultures emphasize different core values, shaping personality in distinct ways. In individualist cultures, such as those in the United States, England, and Australia, people prioritize independence, competition, and personal achievement. These societies tend to promote self-focused traits, with individuals often reporting higher levels of self-esteem. In contrast, collectivist cultures, commonly found in regions like Asia, Africa, and South America, emphasize...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

39.1K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Summary

Age impacts how personality traits like Agreeableness, Openness, and Conscientiousness relate to self-rated health (SRH). Understanding these age-personality interactions is crucial for health studies.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Gerontology
  • Health Sciences

Background:

  • Self-rated health (SRH) is a subjective measure of an individual's health.
  • The Big Five personality traits (Neuroticism, Agreeableness, Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion) are known predictors of SRH.
  • Both SRH and personality traits can change with age, suggesting a potential moderating role for age.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether age moderates the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and SRH.
  • To examine how personality influences perceived health across different age groups.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of a large dataset comprising 33,256 participants (mean age 45.78 years, 55.92% female).
  • Statistical modeling to assess the interaction effects of age and personality traits on SRH, controlling for demographic factors.

Main Results:

  • Age was found to significantly moderate the associations between Agreeableness, Openness, and Conscientiousness with SRH.
  • The influence of certain personality traits on self-rated health varies depending on the individual's age.

Conclusions:

  • The relationship between personality traits and self-rated health is not uniform across the lifespan.
  • Future research on personality and SRH should incorporate age as a critical interactive variable.
