Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

400
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Summary

A new scale, the Physical Activity Regulation Scale (PARS), reliably measures behavioral regulation for physical activity (PA). PARS effectively predicts PA and mediates the intention-PA relationship, aiding PA behavior change research.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral science
  • Health psychology
  • Exercise science

Background:

  • Behavioral regulation tactics are crucial for translating physical activity (PA) intentions into actions.
  • Existing measures of PA regulation lack comprehensiveness, hindering research in this area.

Approach:

  • Developed the Physical Activity Regulation Scale (PARS) using the behavior change technique taxonomy, literature review, and Delphi method.
  • Validated PARS in a Canadian adult population sample (N=1410) using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses.
  • Assessed PARS's internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and predictive validity for PA over two weeks.

Key Points:

  • The 14-item, four-factor PARS (proactive regulation, reactive regulation, social monitoring, self-monitoring) demonstrated high internal consistency (> .80).
  • PARS factors explained 18% of variance in subsequent physical activity.
  • PARS significantly mediated the relationship between intention and physical activity.

Conclusions:

  • The Physical Activity Regulation Scale (PARS) is a reliable and valid measure for assessing PA behavioral regulation.
  • PARS shows potential for use in theoretical models aimed at understanding and promoting PA.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm PARS's utility across diverse populations and contexts.
