Humour processing may involve an implicit pathway alongside the explicit one. This study suggests amusement feelings can occur even with impaired humour comprehension, revising existing cognitive models.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Cognitive Psychology
- Psycholinguistics
Background:
- The humour comprehension-elaboration model posits amusement follows comprehension.
- Clinical observations show preserved amusement despite impaired humour comprehension.
Purpose of the Study:
- To test the hypothesis of an implicit processing pathway for humour.
- To investigate the relationship between humour comprehension and amusement feeling.
Main Methods:
- Twenty healthy participants and two patients with cerebral tumors underwent humour judgment tasks.
- Facial expressions were filmed and analyzed by blinded raters for happy expressions.
- Humour judgment accuracy measured comprehension; happy expressions measured amusement.
Main Results:
- Patient JM showed intact humour comprehension but impaired facial expressions.
- Patient LM exhibited typical happy facial expressions despite deficits in humour comprehension.
- Results contrast between patients, suggesting distinct processing pathways.
Conclusions:
- A potential implicit pathway for amusement feelings is suggested, complementing the explicit pathway.
- The cognitive model of humour comprehension-elaboration requires revision to include this implicit route.
- Findings highlight the complex neural mechanisms underlying humour processing.
