Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Background:

  • Objective measurement of binocular accommodation is challenging.
  • Dynamic stimulation aberrometry (DSA) uses wavefront measurements for dynamic accommodation assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce DSA for objective binocular accommodation measurement in a large, diverse patient group.
  • Compare DSA findings with the subjective push-up method and historical data.

Main Methods:

  • Enrolled 91 patients (20-67 years) with healthy or post-IOL myopic eyes.
  • Performed DSA measurements on all participants.
  • Validated DSA with the subjective push-up method in a subset of patients.

Main Results:

  • Objective accommodative amplitude decreased significantly with age.
  • Accommodation response time increased with age (P=0.0002).
  • Maximum pupil motility during accommodation decreased with age (P=0.0002).

Conclusions:

  • DSA provides objective, dynamic, binocular measurement of accommodation and pupil motility.
  • The method has high time resolution and is suitable for amplitudes up to 7 D.
  • DSA can serve as a control method in future vision studies.
