Summary

Banxia-xiexin tang (BXT), a Chinese herbal medicine, shows promise for functional dyspepsia (FD). BXT and combination therapy improved efficacy and safety compared to Western medicine, offering a potential alternative treatment.

Background:

Functional dyspepsia (FD) management faces challenges with conventional treatments.
Growing demand for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in FD.
Banxia-xiexin tang (BXT), a traditional Chinese herbal formula, is utilized for FD in Asia.

Approach:

Systematic review and meta-analysis of 57 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 5,525 participants.
Searched 11 digital medical databases up to September 1, 2021.
Assessed efficacy of BXT and combination therapy (BXT plus Western medicine) for FD using TCE, motilin levels, SCL-90-R, VAS, and adverse events.

Key Points:

BXT monotherapy and BXT combination therapy demonstrated higher total clinical efficacy rates (TCE) than Western medicine alone.
Combination therapy significantly improved motilin levels and psychological symptoms (SCL-90-R) compared to Western medicine.
No significant difference in visual analog scale (VAS) scores for dyspepsia was found between BXT and placebo.
BXT and combination therapy exhibited fewer adverse events than Western medicine or placebo.

Conclusions:

BXT and its combination therapy represent potentially effective and safe alternative treatments for functional dyspepsia.
Further high-quality RCTs are needed to solidify the evidence base for BXT in FD management.
