We developed a dual-layer index to speed up blockchain traceability queries in food supply chains. This method significantly enhances query efficiency by seven to eight times, despite minor increases in storage.
Area of Science:
- Computer Science
- Information Systems
- Supply Chain Management
Background:
- Blockchain technology offers decentralized and transparent traceability crucial for food supply chains.
- Current blockchain solutions face challenges with high query costs and efficiency.
- Optimizing blockchain-based traceability queries is an active area of research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose and evaluate a novel dual-layer index structure for optimizing traceability queries in blockchain systems.
- To enhance the efficiency of food supply chain traceability queries without compromising blockchain's core characteristics.
Main Methods:
- Development of a dual-layer index structure comprising an external and an internal index.
- Modeling of a blockchain storage module within an experimental environment.
- Conducting extensive simulation experiments to assess query performance.
Main Results:
- The dual-layer index structure significantly improves traceability query efficiency.
- Query rates were enhanced by seven to eight times compared to the original blockchain.
- A slight increase in storage and construction time was observed.
Conclusions:
- The proposed dual-layer index structure is an effective method for optimizing blockchain-based traceability queries.
- This optimization is particularly beneficial for enhancing efficiency in food supply chain applications.
- The trade-off of minimal extra storage and construction time is justified by substantial performance gains.
