Complications following iliac crest bone grafting
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research
|August 1, 1986
Summary
Bone graft removal from the anterior superior iliac crest can cause avulsion fractures of the anterior superior iliac spine. To prevent this complication, bicortical grafts should be harvested at least 5 cm posterior to the spine.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic surgery
- Surgical anatomy
Background:
- The anterior superior iliac spine is a common donor site for bicortical bone grafts.
- Procurement of bone grafts can potentially lead to complications affecting the iliac spine.
