Basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) and insulin growth factor type 1 (IGF-1) significantly enhance muscle regeneration and healing in mice after injury. These growth factors show promise for treating muscle injuries.
Area of Science:
- Muscle regeneration
- Growth factor signaling
- Sports medicine
Background:
- Muscle injuries are common and impact physical function.
- Myoblast proliferation and fusion are key to muscle repair.
- Basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF), insulin growth factor type 1 (IGF-1), and nerve growth factor (NGF) stimulate myoblasts in vitro.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the in vivo efficacy of b-FGF, IGF-1, and NGF in promoting muscle regeneration after injury.
- To assess the impact of these growth factors on muscle healing and functional recovery.
Main Methods:
- Gastrocnemius muscle lacerations were induced in mice.
- Injections of b-FGF, IGF-1, and NGF were administered.
- Muscle regeneration was evaluated at one week using histological and quantitative histology.
- Muscle healing and contractile properties were assessed one month post-injury.
Main Results:
- b-FGF and IGF-1 significantly enhanced muscle regeneration compared to controls.
- NGF showed a lesser, but still positive, effect on muscle regeneration.
- IGF-1 and b-FGF treated muscles exhibited improved healing and increased muscle strength at one month.
- Contractile properties, including fast-twitch and tetanus strengths, were significantly improved with IGF-1 and b-FGF treatment.
Conclusions:
- b-FGF and IGF-1 are potent stimulators of in vivo muscle regeneration and healing.
- These growth factors hold significant therapeutic potential for treating muscle injuries.
- Further research is warranted to explore clinical applications of b-FGF and IGF-1 in muscle repair.
