Summary

Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) affects 4.5% of the general population and is linked to biological factors and psychological impairment. Further research is needed on suicide risk and cultural factors in SSD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To comprehensively synthesize updated evidence on Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD).
  • To include extensive data from Chinese language journals alongside English publications.

Main Methods:

  • A scoping review update incorporating data from CNKI, WANFANG, WEIPU (Jan 2013-May 2022) and PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library (Jun 2020-May 2022).
  • Analysis of 63 full-text articles from an initial pool of 2,984 identified articles.

Main Results:

  • SSD prevalence: 4.5% (general), 25.2% (primary care), 33.5% (specialized care).
  • Associated factors include brain region changes, heart rate variability, psychological impairment, cognitive/emotional dysfunction, and reduced quality of life.
  • High comorbidity with anxiety and depressive disorders; adolescent SSD linked to family function.

Conclusions:

  • SSD shows predictive validity and clinical potential, particularly in China.
  • Psychological impairment is the strongest prognostic predictor.
  • Research gaps remain regarding SSD reliability, prevalence, suicide risk, and cultural/gender factors.
