Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters

2.3K
The introduction of polyesters has brought major development to the textile industry. The wrinkle-free behavior of polyester blends has eliminated the need for starching and ironing clothes.
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the...

Summary

This study introduces a novel Gel Permeation Chromatography-Artificial Neural Network (GPC-ANN) method to determine copolymer composition and molecular weight. The GPC-ANN approach accurately analyzes poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) block copolymers.

Area of Science:

  • Polymer Chemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Computational Chemistry

Background:

  • Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) is standard for polymer mass analysis but lacks copolymer composition data.
  • Accurate characterization of copolymer composition and molecular weight is crucial for material science applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel method combining Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) with Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for comprehensive copolymer analysis.
  • To accurately determine both molecular weight and chemical composition of copolymers using GPC data processed by ANNs.

Main Methods:

  • Development of two Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) trained on GPC data.
  • Target values for ANN training were established using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
  • The GPC-ANN method was applied to analyze poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) (PEO-PPO) block copolymers (poloxamers).

Main Results:

  • The GPC-ANN method successfully determined molecular weight and copolymer composition, validated against MALDI-TOF MS and NMR.
  • High correlation (r > 0.98) was observed between experimental and predicted outputs.
  • Number-average molecular weight (Mn) was predicted with an accuracy below 5% by both ANNs.

Conclusions:

  • The GPC-ANN method offers a powerful and accurate approach for detailed characterization of copolymers, overcoming limitations of traditional GPC.
  • This work represents a foundational step towards creating an open database and expanding the application of GPC-ANN for copolymer analysis.
