Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.0K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Cognitive Development During Adolescence01:18

Cognitive Development During Adolescence

85
During adolescence, individuals experience significant cognitive development that enhances their understanding of others' emotions and thoughts, known as cognitive empathy. This period is marked by an increased ability to adapt to others' perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of others' mental states, a skill that is foundational for social problem-solving and conflict avoidance. The development of cognitive empathy relies heavily on the theory of mind — the...

Marcia's Theory of Identity Status

202
James Marcia's identity status model provides a framework for understanding how adolescents navigate identity formation through varying degrees of exploration and commitment. Marcia's model builds on Erik Erikson's theories of psychosocial development, focusing specifically on how adolescents reconcile individual aspirations with societal expectations. His model describes identity formation as a dynamic process where adolescents move between different states depending on their level...

Purposive Learning

153
E. C. Tolman emphasized the purposiveness of behavior — the idea that much of our behavior is goal-directed. For instance, employees who aim for a promotion work diligently to meet their targets. Tolman argued that when classical conditioning and operant conditioning occur, the organism acquires certain expectations. In classical conditioning, a child might fear a dog because they expect it to bite. In operant conditioning, a person might consistently work overtime because they expect a...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

191
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Emerging Adulthood01:27

Emerging Adulthood

114
Jeffrey Arnett's concept of emerging adulthood offers a framework to understand the unique developmental stage between adolescence and full-fledged adulthood, generally from ages 18 to 25. This period is marked by extensive exploration and shifts in identity, relationships, and career choices, a process known in psychology as role experimentation. Emerging adulthood reflects the evolving cultural expectations surrounding adulthood and the dynamic process of personal transformation during...

Summary

Adolescent goal selection, whether self, relationship, or community-focused, did not significantly impact daily purpose variability. However, other-oriented goals were linked to a slightly higher sense of purpose, supporting equifinality in achieving life meaning.

Area of Science:

  • Developmental Psychology
  • Adolescent Psychology
  • Meaning in Life Research

Background:

  • Adolescence is a critical period for identity formation and goal development.
  • Understanding how adolescents' goals relate to their sense of purpose is crucial for psychological well-being.
  • Previous research has explored goal orientations, but the link to daily purpose variability in adolescents requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate adolescent goal selection patterns.
  • To examine the association between self-, relationship-, and community-focused goals and daily purpose variability.
  • To explore the relationship between these goal types and the mean level sense of purpose in life.

Main Methods:

  • 213 high school students (average age 15.18) participated.
  • Students selected their three most important goals and reported daily sense of purpose for 3 weeks.
  • Latent class analysis identified goal-selection patterns, followed by group comparisons.

Main Results:

  • Four distinct goal-selection classes emerged: Self and Inner Circle, Inner Circle, Other-Oriented, and Self-Oriented.
  • No significant differences were found in the variability of daily purpose or overall sense of purpose across the identified groups.
  • A significant finding indicated that students in the Other-Oriented group reported a more meaningful sense of purpose compared to the Self and Inner Circle group.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescent goal prioritization patterns vary, with distinct groups identified based on their chosen goals.
  • While other-oriented goals showed a modest association with a higher sense of purpose, overall purpose levels did not differ significantly across groups.
  • Findings support the concept of equifinality, suggesting that a meaningful sense of purpose can be achieved through diverse goal pursuits.
