    Background:

    • Ureterosigmoidostomy was a historical treatment for bladder exstrophy.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term functional outcomes and oncologic risks of ureterosigmoidostomy.
    • To assess social adaptation in patients treated for bladder exstrophy.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective follow-up of 158 patients who underwent ureterosigmoidostomy between 1925 and 1970.
    • Telephone interviews were conducted with 52 available patients.

    Main Results:

    • 34 of 52 patients had functioning ureterosigmoidostomy with 30 achieving complete continence.
    • 11% of patients surviving over 15 years developed colon cancer.
    • Most patients were unaware of the adenocarcinoma risk.

    Conclusions:

    • Ureterosigmoidostomy can provide excellent continence and social adaptation.
    • There is a significant long-term risk of colon cancer associated with this procedure.
    • Informed consent and surveillance are crucial for patients undergoing ureterosigmoidostomy.
