Bridging the Technology Divide in the COVID-19 Era: Using Virtual Outreach to Expose Middle and High School Students to Imaging Technology

Background:

Cryptogenic stroke requires timely, etiology-specific management.
Disadvantaged populations face significant barriers to accessing post-stroke care and secondary prevention.
Student-run clinics (SRCs) can bridge healthcare gaps for vulnerable individuals.

Observation:

A 46-year-old uninsured patient with undocumented immigration status presented to an SRC for post-stroke care.
The patient received comprehensive services including specialist consultations, medications, therapies, and surgical intervention, all free of charge.
The SRC acted as a crucial access point for healthcare services otherwise unattainable due to socioeconomic constraints.

Findings:

The patient achieved a full recovery without disability one year after her stroke.
No recurrence of cerebrovascular ischemic events was observed during the follow-up period.
The SRC successfully facilitated secondary stroke prevention and management.

Implications:

SRCs offer a dual benefit: providing essential healthcare to underserved populations and offering invaluable clinical experience to medical students.
This case underscores the critical role of SRCs in managing complex conditions like cryptogenic stroke in resource-limited settings.
Expanding the reach and services of SRCs can significantly improve health equity and patient outcomes for disadvantaged individuals.
