Summary

Topological data analysis (TDA) Mapper graphs effectively discriminate aneurysm rupture status. This novel approach shows promise for classifying challenging bifurcation aneurysms, outperforming traditional methods in multivariate analysis.

Background:

  • Topological Data Analysis (TDA) identifies patterns using topological signatures.
  • TDA has not been previously applied to aneurysm research.
  • This study investigates TDA Mapper graphs for aneurysm rupture discrimination.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of TDA Mapper graphs in differentiating ruptured from unruptured aneurysms.
  • To assess the performance of Mapper Dissimilarity Scores (MDS) in aneurysm classification.
  • To compare TDA-based methods with traditional size/shape and radiomics features.

Main Methods:

  • 216 bifurcation aneurysms (90 ruptured) were analyzed using 3D rotational angiography.
  • Aneurysms were segmented and evaluated for size/shape and radiomics features.
  • TDA Mapper graphs were constructed, and Mapper Dissimilarity Scores (MDS) were computed based on shape metrics.

Main Results:

  • Average MDS was significantly higher for ruptured aneurysm pairs compared to unruptured pairs (P < .0001).
  • An MDS threshold of 0.0417 achieved an AUC of 0.73 for rupture classification.
  • Multivariate analysis including MDS yielded an AUC of 0.82, outperforming other feature sets.

Conclusions:

  • Mapper TDA offers a novel and promising approach for aneurysm rupture status classification.
  • The TDA-based method demonstrated high accuracy, particularly for challenging bifurcation aneurysms.
  • Further research is warranted to optimize Mapper functionality for aneurysm evaluation.
