Detailed Structure and Function of Lymph Nodes

1.9K
Lymph nodes are bean-shaped structures that cluster along the lymphatic vessels in the inguinal, axillary, and cervical regions. Each node is divided into compartments by a capsule that extends trabeculae inward.
From a histological perspective, lymph nodes can be split into two main areas: the superficial cortex and the deep medulla. The outer cortex is populated by dendritic cells, macrophages, and B lymphocytes, which are densely packed into follicles. When these B-lymphocytes are presented...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Hematology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Breast lymphoma encompasses primary breast lymphoma (PBL) and secondary to systemic lymphoma (SBL).
  • Diffuse Large B cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) is the predominant subtype of PBL.
  • PBL is a rare malignancy requiring specific diagnostic and management strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and outcomes of eleven breast lymphoma cases.
  • To analyze the characteristics of both primary and secondary breast lymphoma.
  • To evaluate treatment efficacy and patient survival in breast lymphoma.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of breast lymphoma patient data from 2011-2022.
  • Data collection from hospital recording systems and patient follow-up.
  • Analysis of clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, treatment regimens, and outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Eleven female patients were included, with an average age of 66.1 years.
  • DLBCL was the most common diagnosis (8/11), followed by follicular and lymphoplasmacytic lymphomas.
  • Chemoradiotherapy was the standard treatment; outcomes varied, with 5 complete remissions and 4 early deaths.

Conclusions:

  • Primary breast lymphoma is an aggressive disease requiring systemic treatment.
  • Chemoradiotherapy is the primary treatment modality for PBL.
  • Early diagnosis and prompt, appropriate treatment are vital for improving outcomes in breast lymphoma.
