[Fine structural changes in degenerative tendinopathy]

50 tendons were examined by electron microscopy. Although they did not demonstrate any signs of inflammation or lipomatosis marked hypoxic changes in the tenocytes were evident on ultrastructural examination. The most frequent alterations were longitudinal splitting, disintegration, angulation and the so-called "kink deformation" of the collagen fibers.
