Area of Science:

  • Digital mental health
  • Human-computer interaction
  • Psychological interventions

Background:

  • Mental health apps and chatbots show promise for efficacy, availability, and accessibility.
  • The ChatPal chatbot was developed to enhance mental well-being in rural populations.
  • ChatPal is a multilingual tool offering psychoeducational content and exercises like mindfulness and mood logging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of the multilingual ChatPal chatbot on mental well-being.
  • To identify characteristics of users with improved or worsened well-being.
  • To analyze user feedback through thematic analysis.

Main Methods:

  • A 12-week pre-post intervention study involving 348 participants across five European regions.
  • Outcome measures included the Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale, WHO-Five Well-Being Index, and Satisfaction with Life Scale.
  • Qualitative analysis of written feedback was conducted to identify user experience themes.

Main Results:

  • Participant well-being scores showed marginal improvement but were not statistically significant.
  • Younger individuals who interacted more with ChatPal showed improved well-being.
  • User feedback revealed themes of positive, mixed, and negative experiences, with technical issues noted.

Conclusions:

  • ChatPal demonstrated marginal, nonsignificant improvements in mental well-being.
  • The chatbot may complement existing digital or face-to-face mental health services.
  • Further research is recommended to confirm the effectiveness of blended mental health care models.
