Genome-wide Association Studies-GWAS01:11

Genome-wide Association Studies-GWAS

13.6K
Genome-wide association studies or GWAS are used to identify whether common SNPs are associated with certain diseases. Suppose specific SNPs are more frequently observed in individuals with a particular disease than those without the disease. In that case, those SNPs are said to be associated with the disease. Chi-square analysis is performed to check the probability of the allele likely to be associated with the disease.
GWAS does not require the identification of the target gene involved in...

Cancer-Critical Genes II: Tumor Suppressor Genes

7.5K
Genes usually encode proteins necessary for the proper functioning of a healthy cell. Mutations can often cause changes to the gene expression pattern, thereby altering the phenotype.
When the function of certain critical genes, especially those involved in cell cycle regulation and cell growth signaling cascades, gets disrupted, it upsets the cell cycle progression. Such cells with unchecked cell cycles start proliferating uncontrollably and eventually develop into tumors.
Such genes that act...

Summary

Most breast surgeons are hesitant about universal genetic testing (UGT) due to training gaps, access issues, and patient psychosocial concerns. Further education is needed to improve surgeon comfort with implementing UGT for breast cancer patients.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Genetics
  • Medical Education

Background:

  • The American Society of Breast Surgeons recommends genetic testing for all breast cancer patients.
  • Physician comfort and knowledge regarding universal genetic testing (UGT) implementation remain unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore breast surgeons' attitudes and perspectives on universal genetic testing (UGT).

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative study involving semi-structured virtual interviews with 31 breast surgeons.
  • Thematic analysis of interview transcripts to identify key themes and categories.

Main Results:

  • Most surgeons practice in academic/community settings, with established genetics programs and referral processes.
  • Concerns were raised regarding access to genetic services and the psychosocial impact of UGT on patients.
  • A minority of surgeons currently order UGT, with a majority desiring more genetics training.

Conclusions:

  • Surgeons express concerns about UGT related to training, service access, and patient psychosocial effects.
  • Improved surgeon training and support are necessary to facilitate the implementation of UGT in breast cancer care.
