We created the Sarcopenia Knowledge Questionnaire (SKQ) to assess older adults' understanding of sarcopenia. This reliable and valid tool measures knowledge on screening, outcomes, and lifestyle factors.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Public Health
- Health Education
Background:
- Sarcopenia, a progressive loss of muscle mass and strength, significantly impacts older adults' health and independence.
- Assessing and improving sarcopenia awareness is crucial for early detection and management.
- Existing tools may not adequately capture the multifaceted knowledge required for understanding sarcopenia.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate the Sarcopenia Knowledge Questionnaire (SKQ).
- To evaluate the reliability and validity of the SKQ in a sample of older adults.
- To provide a standardized tool for measuring sarcopenia knowledge in this demographic.
Main Methods:
- Development of the SKQ with 23 items across three domains: screening/diagnosis, outcomes, and lifestyle factors.
- Administration of the SKQ to 293 older adults.
- Statistical analysis including Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency, correlation with a health literacy questionnaire for convergent validity, and item discrimination analysis.
Main Results:
- The SKQ demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.969).
- The questionnaire showed moderate convergent validity, correlating significantly with the Mandarin Multidimensional Health Literacy Questionnaire (r = 0.511, p < 0.001).
- Item discrimination was satisfactory, with critical ratios ranging from 9.90 to 25.82 (p < 0.001).
Conclusions:
- The Sarcopenia Knowledge Questionnaire (SKQ) is a reliable and valid instrument.
- The SKQ effectively measures the knowledge of older adults regarding sarcopenia.
- This tool can aid in identifying knowledge gaps and informing targeted health education interventions for sarcopenia.

Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:
Changes in the Appendicular Skeleton with Age
Initially, the limb buds consist of a core of mesenchyme covered by a layer of ectoderm. The ectoderm at the end of the limb bud thickens to form a narrow crest called the apical ectodermal ridge. This ridge stimulates the underlying...
