    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate water permeability and histological changes in rat skin following superficial epidermal alterations.
    • To characterize the biphasic regeneration process of the epidermis.

    Main Methods:

    • Rat skin subjected to four types of superficial epidermal alterations: scalpel blade, sandpaper abrasion, tape stripping, and suction blister top removal.
    • Measurement of water permeability (in vivo and in vitro) and histological examination of regenerated epidermis.

    Main Results:

    • All epidermal alterations increased skin permeability, with suction blister removal causing the greatest increase.

    • Abnormal rat skin models are suitable for quantitative studies of absorption through compromised epidermis.
