Green tea and curcumin show significant chemopreventive effects against oral cancer. Combining both compounds enhances their efficacy in preventing oral carcinogenesis, offering a promising natural therapeutic strategy.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Natural Products Chemistry
- Preventive Medicine
Background:
- Chemoprevention utilizes specific substances to inhibit cancer development.
- Curcumin (from Curcuma longa) and catechins (from green tea) are potent polyphenols.
- Epigallocatechin gallate, a major green tea polyphenol, exhibits synergistic effects with curcumin.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the chemopreventive effects of green tea and curcumin, individually and in combination.
- To evaluate their impact on chemically induced hamster buccal pouch carcinoma.
Main Methods:
- Fifty Syrian golden hamsters were used, divided into five groups (control, carcinogen only, green tea, curcumin, combination).
- Squamous cell carcinoma was chemically induced.
- Apoptosis, proliferation, and angiogenesis were assessed using flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry.
- Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA.
Main Results:
- The combination group demonstrated significantly increased apoptosis compared to controls.
- Green tea and curcumin treatments individually also increased apoptosis.
- Reduced red fluorescence in cell nuclei indicated suppressed proliferation.
- Microvessel density was significantly lower in treated groups compared to the positive control.
Conclusions:
- The combination of green tea and curcumin exhibits a significant chemopreventive effect against oral carcinogenesis.
- These natural compounds hold promise for the prevention of oral cancers.
