Background:

Essential tremor (ET) is a prevalent neurological disorder with suspected cerebellar involvement.
Identifying reliable biomarkers is crucial for understanding ET's etiology, pathophysiology, and classification.
Serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) is an emerging indicator of neuronal injury in various neurological conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) concentrations in patients with essential tremor (ET) compared to healthy controls.
To assess the potential of NfL as a biomarker for ET.

Main Methods:

A case-control study involving 41 ET patients and 40 age-matched healthy controls.
Serum NfL levels were measured using Simoa technology.
Statistical analyses included multiple linear regression, adjusting for age, sex, and cognitive scores.

Serum NfL concentrations were significantly higher in ET patients (p=0.0002).
