This study adapted the Small Steps for Big Changes (SSBC) type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevention program to improve equitable access and inclusivity for high-risk populations. Recommendations are provided for other researchers to enhance health program inclusivity.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Health Equity
- Chronic Disease Prevention
Background:
- Social determinants of health, colonialism, and systemic injustices disproportionately increase type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk in certain populations.
- Existing T2D prevention programs often lack equitable and inclusive design, failing to reach at-risk groups effectively.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present an evidence-based approach for enhancing equitable access and inclusivity in community T2D prevention programs.
- To detail modifications made to the Small Steps for Big Changes (SSBC) program based on stakeholder input and the ConNECT Framework.
Main Methods:
- Modified program eligibility criteria and delivery methods to improve reach to populations most at risk for T2D.
- Adapted measurement tools and provided inclusive training for program facilitators to ensure equitable testing and delivery.
- Utilized a stakeholder advisory group and the ConNECT Framework to guide program modifications.
Main Results:
- The SSBC program successfully implemented changes to enhance inclusivity and reach for T2D prevention.
- Specific adjustments to eligibility, delivery, measurements, and training were key to improving program equity.
- Actionable recommendations were developed for broader application in health program design.
Conclusions:
- Community T2D prevention programs can be effectively adapted for greater equity and inclusivity.
- Stakeholder engagement and structured frameworks are crucial for designing and implementing inclusive health interventions.
- These adaptations are vital for ensuring that prevention efforts reach and benefit populations most vulnerable to T2D.
