Background:

  • Youth with disabilities (YWD) are a growing population but are underrepresented in research.
  • Understanding identity development in YWD is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the applicability of the positive youth development (PYD) model for YWD.
  • To identify which PYD constructs (the "Cs") are relevant to YWD identity development.
  • To explore adaptations of the PYD model for YWD.

Main Methods:

  • A qualitative metasynthesis of 18 studies was conducted.
  • Articles were coded based on the "Cs" of PYD: competence, confidence, connection, character, caring/compassion, and contribution.
  • Emerging constructs related to YWD were identified.

Main Results:

  • Evidence was found for four of the original six "Cs" of PYD in YWD.
  • Two new "Cs," coping and constraints, emerged as potentially unique to YWD.
  • These findings suggest a need for model adaptation.

Conclusions:

  • The positive youth development (PYD) model can be applied to YWD, but requires adaptation.
  • Incorporating "coping" and "constraints" may enhance the model's relevance for YWD.
  • An expanded PYD framework could improve understanding of positive development in marginalized youth.
