Radiation: Applications

1.2K
The average temperature of Earth is the subject of much current discussion. Earth is in radiative contact with both the Sun and dark space; it receives almost all its energy from the radiation of the Sun and reflects some of it into outer space. Dark space is very cold, about 3 K, so Earth radiates energy into it. For instance, heat transfer occurs from soil and grasses, the rate of which can be so rapid that frost can occur on clear summer evenings, even in warm latitudes.
The average...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology and Medical Physics
  • Health Informatics
  • Data Science

Context:

  • The Unitrad group initiated a data farming project in 2016 to systematically collect and utilize extensive structured real-world data during radiotherapy.
  • Data selection occurs through expert consensus, with continuous updates, and is captured within the MOSAIQ© system during patient treatment.

Purpose:

  • To generate and leverage large volumes of structured real-world data for radiotherapy research.
  • To facilitate the creation of real-world knowledge by researchers through data extraction and analysis.
  • To establish a collaborative, multicenter framework for data production and sharing.

Summary:

  • Real-world data from radiotherapy treatments is collected, stored in relational databases across institutions, and then extracted for research.
  • The project employs an agile methodology, incorporating feedback to ensure flexible and rapid system evolution.
  • Data sharing adheres to regulations, supporting diverse research projects.

Impact:

  • Led to the development of specialized health data warehouses for radiotherapy data.
  • Facilitated the publication of numerous academic studies, contributing to cancerology research.
  • Established a collaborative network of clinicians and researchers focused on knowledge creation from real-world radiotherapy data.
