F Barbandi, F Quenzer, K Rapp

    Annals of Allergy
    |September 1, 1986
    PubMed
    Summary

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonology
    • Rheumatology
    • Clinical Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for pain and inflammation.
    • Drug-induced lung disease is a rare but serious adverse effect.
    • Hypersensitivity reactions can manifest with diverse clinical presentations.

    Observation:

    • A 77-year-old female presented with bilateral pulmonary infiltrates.
    • Associated symptoms included chills, fatigue, fever, leukocytosis, and eosinophilia.
    • Pulmonary symptoms and radiologic findings emerged during Nalfon (fenoprofen) therapy.

    Findings:

    • Clinical symptoms resolved within 24 hours of Nalfon discontinuation.
    • Radiologic abnormalities cleared several days after treatment with prednisone.
    • The presentation strongly suggests an idiosyncratic or hypersensitivity reaction to Nalfon.

    Implications:

    • Nalfon (fenoprofen) can induce pulmonary hypersensitivity reactions.
    • Prompt recognition and drug withdrawal are crucial for patient recovery.
    • This case highlights the importance of considering drug reactions in pulmonary presentations.
