Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

84
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

65
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Behavior Modification01:21

Behavior Modification

202
Behavioral approaches have often been criticized for ignoring mental processes and focusing solely on observable behavior. However, these approaches provide an optimistic perspective for individuals seeking to change their behaviors. Rather than concentrating on intrinsic personality traits, behavioral approaches suggest that even longstanding habits can be modified by changing the reward contingencies that maintain them.
A real-world application of operant conditioning principles is applied...

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

122
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

78
Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

1.6K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Medical Education
  • Mental Health

Background:

  • Pediatric residents often identify behavioral and mental health (B/MH) assessment and treatment as a significant training gap.
  • Many residents feel inadequately prepared to manage pediatric B/MH issues in clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a novel interactive training program designed to enhance resident confidence in managing common pediatric B/MH conditions.
  • To address the identified training gap in pediatric B/MH care.

Main Methods:

  • A curriculum named Be ExPeRT was implemented, featuring a half-day seminar on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression, and suicidality.
  • The program included didactic material, role-play, and case discussions, followed by monthly case-based discussions.
  • The training was optional for pediatric or combined medicine-pediatrics trainees.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant improvement in comfort was observed for treating major depressive disorder (41% to 94%), suicide risk (29% to 94%), and anxiety (24% to 94%).
  • Of the 16 participants completing the postsurvey, 75% rated the training among the top 5%-10% of their learning experiences.
  • Twenty-three residents participated in the training over two years.

Conclusions:

  • The developed curriculum effectively enhanced trainee knowledge and comfort in addressing common pediatric B/MH conditions in primary care.
  • The program was well-received and demonstrated significant improvements in self-reported comfort levels for treating key B/MH issues.
  • This curriculum is adaptable for various primary care provider training programs to supplement existing B/MH education.
