Summary

This study found no histological difference in wound healing between Monocryl and Ethilon sutures after 14 days. However, nylon sutures showed earlier fibrotic union, suggesting potential benefits for tissue regeneration.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Materials Science
  • Wound Healing Research
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • A wide array of suture materials exist with varying properties, leading to clinical uncertainty regarding optimal choices for patient healing.
  • Key differentiating factors include origin, absorption, degradation, and structural composition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To comparatively evaluate Monocryl (polyglycaprone 25) and Ethilon (nylon) suture threads.
  • To assess their efficacy in promoting tissue regeneration through histological and immunohistochemical analysis.

Main Methods:

  • A basic experimental study involving 12 Wistar rats, randomly assigned to three groups.
  • Four longitudinal incisions were made per animal under anesthesia, with groups evaluated at 1, 7, and 14 days post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • No significant histological differences in wound healing were observed among the groups at 14 days.
  • Nylon sutures demonstrated greater evidence of earlier fibrotic union compared to Monocryl.

Conclusions:

  • The study concluded that there was no histological difference in healing 14 days post-surgery between the evaluated suture types.
  • Nylon exhibited a trend towards earlier fibrotic union, warranting further investigation.
