    Background:

    • Sleep disturbances, including difficulty falling asleep and maintaining sleep, affect a significant portion of the population.
    • Objective and subjective measures are crucial for evaluating sleep quality and treatment efficacy.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of L-tryptophan supplementation on sleep parameters in patients with sleep onset and sleep maintenance disturbances.
    • To assess both objective electroencephalogram (EEG) data and subjective self-reported sleep quality.

    Main Methods:

    • A mobile 4-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) system was used for night sleep recordings in 10 patients.
    • Three consecutive nights were recorded: a baseline night, a night with saline infusion, and a night after 5g L-tryptophan administration.
    • Automatic evaluation of sleep parameters and subjective self-rating scales were employed.

    • L-tryptophan significantly decreased sleep onset latency to light sleep stages.

    • The findings suggest L-tryptophan may be a beneficial treatment particularly for individuals with insomnia characterized by difficulty falling asleep.
    • Further research is warranted to explore its effects on other sleep architecture components.
