Many gynecologists lack training in anal cancer prevention (ACP) but are eager for more education and to integrate ACP into their practices. This study surveyed 196 gynecologists on their knowledge and practices.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Preventive Medicine
- Gynecology
Background:
- Anal cancer prevention (ACP) is crucial for early detection and improved patient outcomes.
- Current training and practice patterns among gynecologists regarding ACP are not well-defined.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the knowledge, attitudes, training, and practices of practicing gynecologists concerning anal cancer prevention.
- To identify gaps in ACP education and gauge willingness for further training.
Main Methods:
- A survey was administered to 196 practicing gynecologists between January and June 2022.
- Data collected included knowledge of screening indications and tools, training history, and current practice of ACP procedures.
- Descriptive statistics and chi-squared analysis were employed.
Main Results:
- Over 80% recognized screening indications, but only 36% knew all three screening tools.
- Formal ACP training was reported by only 13.9% in medical school and 25.9% in residency.
- Low rates of performing anal cytology (21%) and digital anal rectal examinations (32%) were observed.
Conclusions:
- A significant gap exists in formal anal cancer prevention training for gynecologists.
- The majority of surveyed gynecologists expressed a need for additional training and high willingness to participate in ACP education.
- There is a clear opportunity to enhance gynecologists' capacity to provide anal cancer prevention services.
