Lifestyle Factors and Health01:20

Lifestyle Factors and Health

75
Lifestyle factors play a critical role in maintaining overall health and preventing chronic diseases. Key elements, such as regular physical activity, a nutritious diet, and abstinence from smoking, can significantly enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being while reducing the risk of several life-threatening conditions.

Exercise and Cardiac Output

Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining cardiovascular health, with aerobic exercises being particularly effective. According to the American Heart Association, 150 minutes of moderate to intense aerobic exercise per week is recommended for a healthy heart. Aerobic activities may include brisk walking, running, bicycling, cross-country skiing, and swimming, ideally performed three to five times per week.
Sustained exercise increases the muscles' oxygen demand, which can be...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

1.6K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results...

Summary

US municipalities saw increased adoption of policies supporting physical activity, like walkable block sizes and bike infrastructure, between 2014 and 2021. However, disparities in policy prevalence widened, particularly for Complete Streets policies.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Urban Planning
  • Community Design

Background:

  • The Community-Based Survey of Supports for Healthy Eating and Active Living tracks municipal policies promoting physical activity.
  • Understanding trends in these supports is crucial for public health initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine changes in the prevalence of municipal policies and community design supports for physical activity from 2014 to 2021.
  • To analyze these changes overall and by municipality characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Independent random sampling of US municipalities in 2014 and 2021.
  • Calculation of prevalence and prevalence ratios (PR) for 15 physical activity supports.
  • Statistical testing for interaction by municipality characteristics using Bonferroni-corrected Breslow-Day test.

Main Results:

  • Increased prevalence of zoning codes for walkable block sizes (PR=1.46), sidewalk width (PR=1.19), pedestrian amenities (PR=1.15), continuous sidewalks (PR=1.14), and building orientation (PR=1.08).
  • Increased prevalence of design standards for dedicated bicycle infrastructure (PR=1.19).
  • Decreased prevalence of shared use agreements (PR=0.87).
  • Widened prevalence gaps between populous and less populous municipalities for Complete Streets policies and walkable block size zoning.

Conclusions:

  • Progress in adopting physical activity-friendly policies and design features is evident.
  • Continued efforts are needed to encourage wider adoption of these supports across all communities.
