Acute retinal pigment epitheliitis (ARPE) is a self-limiting eye condition. This case report suggests that intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) may rapidly resolve ARPE symptoms.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Retinal Diseases
- Medical Case Reports
Background:
- Acute retinal pigment epitheliitis (ARPE), also known as Krill's disease, is a self-limiting retinal condition.
- Currently, there is no specific established treatment for ARPE.
Observation:
- A young female presented with a few days history of scotoma in her right eye.
- Clinical examination and imaging were consistent with a diagnosis of ARPE.
- The patient was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP).
Findings:
- Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) revealed a reduction in lesion hyperreflectivity and height by day 3 post-IVMP.
- Near-total resolution of the ARPE lesion was observed by day 5 post-IVMP.
Implications:
- This case suggests that IVMP may be an effective treatment for rapidly resolving ARPE.
- Further studies are warranted to confirm the efficacy of IVMP in ARPE management.
