Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle01:22

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle

438
The ovarian cycle regulates endometrial changes throughout a single menstrual cycle via the coordinated action of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotrophins.
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH...

Drugs for Peptic Ulcer Disease: Prostaglandin Analogs as Mucosal Protective Agents

495
The gastric mucosa produces prostaglandins E2 (PGE2) and prostacyclin (PGI2), crucial in maintaining gastric health. They exert cytoprotective effects, including increasing bicarbonate secretion, releasing protective mucin, reducing gastric acid output, and preventing harmful vasoconstriction. These effects are mediated through various receptors, such as EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can induce peptic ulcers by inhibiting cyclooxygenase, decreasing...

Summary

Endometrial hyperplasia and polyps show higher COX2 expression. Estrogen Receptor (ER) and COX2 expression correlate in the endometrium, suggesting a role in endometrial hyperplastic processes.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Endometrial hyperplastic processes (EHPs) include endometrial hyperplasia (EH) and endometrial polyps.
  • These conditions involve increased endometrial glands relative to stroma.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate Estrogen Receptor (ER) and Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) expression in EH and endometrial polyps.
  • Determine correlations between ER/COX2 and histological/anthropometric parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Tissue samples from hysteroresectoscopy categorized into non-atypical EH, glandular EP, and glandular-fibrous EP.
  • Immunohistochemical analysis using anti-COX2 and anti-ER antibodies.

Main Results:

  • EHPs showed significantly higher COX2 expression than intact tissues.
  • A direct correlation between ER and COX2 expression was observed in endometrial epithelium.
  • No association found between ER/COX2 expression and EHP type or patient anthropometry.

Conclusions:

  • Varied ER and COX2 expressions in EHPs suggest synergistic involvement in initiation and progression.
  • These factors may play a role in endometrial hyperplastic processes and subsequent tumor transformation.
