    Summary

    General anesthesia transiently suppresses canine lymphocyte response to mitogens. T cells showed greater susceptibility than B cells, with recovery observed within four days.

    Background:

    • General anesthesia is commonly used in veterinary medicine for diagnostic procedures.
    • The impact of anesthesia on the immune system, particularly in canines, requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the in vitro response of canine lymphocytes to mitogenic stimulation after general anesthesia.
    • To determine the duration of any observed immunosuppressive effects and identify susceptible immune cell types.

    Main Methods:

    • Canine peripheral blood lymphocytes were isolated and stimulated in vitro with phytohemagglutinin (PHA), concanavalin A (ConA), and pokeweed mitogen (PWM).
    • Lymphocyte blastogenic response was measured at various time points (4 hours, 24 hours, 4 days) post-anesthesia induction.
